First Zelda to sell over 1 million copies since OOT

The Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold over one million copies!

According to the most recent Media-Create report, nearly 7,000 copies from May 28th to June 3rd. This amount was just enough to push the overall sales of the game to over 1,000,000 physical copies sold in Japan alone! The Zelda franchise had not sold more than 1,000,000 copies in Japan since Ocarina of Time!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out on March 3rd over a year ago. The game came out to rave reviews and was for a brief period of time a cultural phenomenon. This was largely thanks to its incredibly fresh take on the Zelda formula. Breath of the Wild returns to the roots of the original NES Legend of Zelda by opening up the game world and allowing players to progress through the story at their own pace.

The changes to the structure of Zelda are what has allowed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to become a tentpole title for the Switch. The game sold 7,000 last week. It’s been consistently selling between 3,000 and 7,000 copies weekly long after its launch in Japan. As such it frequently shows up on Media-Create ’s weekly top 20 sellers list.

We hope this leads to a trend for the series in the future! We can’t image Nintendo’s not thrilled with the sales for the game. Hopefully, we’ll see more elements from Breath of the Wild in future installments of the franchise!
